To Poop or Not to Poop: My Colon Hydrotherapy Experience

Yes, it is true, everyone poops!!!! (Spoiler alert) and I am going to share with you how colon hydrotherapy (aka colonics/colon cleanses) have helped me.

What is truly disgusting is when someone is so sick that they cannot have a bowel movement for days, or even weeks, at a time. This was the case for me for as long as I could remember when I would go 2-3 days without a proper bowel movement and I thought that was normal. Let me tell y’all, that SHIT ain’t normal! You can read about part 1, II & III of my healing journey.

What is a colon cleanse/colon hydrotherapy?

The colon cleanse has been used throughout history to improve the body’s natural detoxification process, restore digestive health & improve overall quality of life. The purpose of a colon cleanse/colon hydrotherapy is to flush out built up waste in the tract by hydrating old stool that has hardened and built up in your colon. Water is used to soften the toxic material so that is can be passed more easily. The ultimate goal is to help the digestive organs do their job as best as possible.

What was my experience like?

My session took place in a lovely office setting at the Naya Wellness Center in San Diego, CA. My hydrotherapist made me feel extremely comfortable from our very first phone conversation all the way through until I left the center.

The session begins by changing into a hospital gown and gently inserting a silicon device into your anus. I used 100% organic, cold-pressed unrefined coconut oil as a lubricant which is highly effective and made that initial step as comfortable as possible. Let’s be honest, I have never done anything like this before and it was so strange.

She turned on the machine and explained that water will be flowing ever so gently into my body and I will begin to feel extremely full. My body will naturally tighten up from head to toe but I just need to focus on my breathe and relax completely. Then, she massages my abdomen to help relax my body so that I can release any/all of the build-up more easily. I am not going to lie, the first 15-minutes were extremely uncomfortable but you will feel so much healthier, lighter and focused afterwards.

After about 45-minutes of massages, foot rubs, hand rubs, focusing on pressure points, the session comes to an end. I never actually saw what come out of me because this experience needs some boundaries, come on! However, I certainly knew it was quite a lot and the procedure was highly effective for me. I felt like a whole new person.

This process definitely takes a lot out of you because you are pushing and focusing on relaxing at the same time. Plus, it is very nerve-racking having someone else in the room with you but there comes a point when you can’t hold it in any longer and that is when your body begins to release everything it has been holding in for so long.

The following week, I had more regular bowel movements that were 2-3x/day and the correct “shape/consistency.”

What is Next?

After the session you are instructed to eat soups, juice, liquid and mushy foods for a few days just to give your body time to adjust and you don’t want to overwhelm it right away. Just think about taking things slowly and being kind and nourishing to yourself.

I plan to continue with a colon hydrotherapy session once per season (spring, summer, fall & winter) as a way to welcome the change in weather and embark on a new time of my life. I like to think of it as a seasonal cleanse which will incorporate a 72-hour liquid cleanse, break from any stress triggers, colon hydrotherapy and (basically) anything else that can promote detoxification in my life.

There are plenty of other options for a colon cleanse such as laxatives, juicing, psyllium husk and enemas which are versions of colonics that you can do at home. I can only attest to the juice cleansing and colonic hydrotherapy which I would highly recommend to all of my readers.

I hope this post did not gross anyone out too much because it was meant to provide helpful information about, yet, another resource of holistic healing. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below and Happy Healing!
